Internal Auditor Certification

There is no requirement for internal auditors be certified. Third-party auditors require certification in order to audit for a registrar, but no such requirements exist for internal auditors. Although ISO 10011 gives guidance on auditor selection, most businesses ignore (mostly because they are ignorant to its existence) the guidance and select auditors using other criteria.

Even though there is no requirement for certification, certification is possible. The Registrar Accreditation Board, or RAB offers a certification program for Quality Management Systems (QMS) internal auditors. You can obtain more information about certification by visiting RAB's QMS Internal Auditor page.

Another certification option is the American Society for Quality's (ASQ) Certified Quality Auditor (CQA). Once again, there is no requirement to be certified, but by achieving either of the above indicates your level of professionalism and dedication to the profession of internal quality auditing.

Because this site uses information from many different sources, it must be pointed out that any advice, tips, information, etc., provided should be regarded as opinion and not fact! What works well for one company may be a disaster for another. Also, what one registrar, or auditor may allow, another may not. As always, reflect on what you read, see if it fits into your own quality system, and if it conflicts with your auditor...you've got to make a decision.
